Two weeks after they first did, about 50 students, parents and community members again gathered Monday afternoon outside the District 65 school board room to play music, eat tamales, draw on the sidewalk and hold up signs demanding for the board to “save Bessie Rhodes.”

The K-8 magnet school in Skokie has been on the chopping block for two years now, with the district facing overall declining enrollment and aging facilities. But the original plan for launching a Fifth Ward school made space for Bessie Rhodes to become a “magnet school within a school” on that campus.

Now, with that plan thrown out because it went over budget, the Rhodes community is facing the possibility it could no longer exist in any setting.
